Navi Pivot Mount — pivoting sat-nav mount realised with a compliant mechanism

Off-road, a motorcycle is ridden either sitting or standing depending on the terrain. The viewing angle to the navigation system changes so drastically as a result that the display becomes unreadable.

Setup

The navigation system is mounted centrally and aligned to be clearly legible when seated. Off-road, you ride standing up. Since modern motorcycle navigation systems also include off-road route planning, the navi can be used there as well. In that case, the viewing angle onto the display becomes so flat that it is no longer legible.

Assignment

A mount was designed that allows the device to be tilted upward by 29° so the screen can be read normally.

The requirement for the folding mechanism was that it had to function equally well at any temperature. The available space was very limited, and the mechanism was required to lock in place at both the maximum and minimum positions. At every position, the locking action had to provide enough force that even heavy impacts off-road would not fold the navi back down. Any mechanism relying on friction would have been inadequate here, since friction varies with temperature and wear. Instead, a nearly monolithic approach was chosen: the spring is a plastic structure in the form of a compliant mechanism, making it part of the component itself.

Result

The result is a functioning, tested pivot mount. It reliably folds up, locks into place via the compliant mechanism, and restores legibility when riding standing up.

Numbers & Facts

  • ▪29° opening angle
  • ▪The spring is a fixed component (compliant mechanism) — friction-free
  • ▪works with very few parts
  • ▪tested – flawless function
