Roof console for an expedition vehicle
Space is a scarce commodity in the cab of an expedition vehicle. A made-to-measure roof console brings together radio, lighting and storage exactly where nothing was provided as standard.
Setup
An expedition vehicle is usually tailored to its owners. Especially in compact vehicles, many things have to fit into a small space. There simply wasn't room in the dashboard for the recently added CB radio, the additional interior lighting and the switch panel for the roof-mounted beacon lights. The client wanted these systems integrated into an overhead console tailored precisely to his vehicle: as many functions as possible in as little space as possible.
Assignment
The console was planned, designed, manufactured and fitted into the vehicle. It integrates the CB radio with a mount for the microphone and coiled cable, switches for the additional interior LEDs, switches for the beacon lights, plus a compass mount and a storage compartment. All the wiring runs through a fuse box built into the console; connection and final fitting in the vehicle were also part of the job.
Manufacturing was carried out using an additive manufacturing process, a direct consequence of the quantity involved: for a single component that has to follow the roof shape of the cab, a mould tool simply doesn't pay off. PETG withstands the stresses inside the cabin, which mainly means body movement and temperature. Steel reinforcements were added to account for the weaker areas resulting from the manufacturing process. The fuse box sits within the console itself, so that the wiring for all additional consumers comes together in one place and stays accessible for servicing.
Result
The console was fitted in 2026 and has been in operation ever since. With its microfibre velour upholstery, it blends into the interior.
