Concept: intelligent mattress for pressure ulcer prevention
When patients have to remain in one position for a long time for medical reasons, pressure sores can develop, leading to severe injuries. There are already systems on the market that counteract this, but they reposition patients on a fixed schedule rather than according to the patient's condition.

Setup
A pressure ulcer is a sore that develops in bedridden patients who can no longer move on their own. It forms where sustained pressure cuts off blood flow — a softer surface only helps to a limited extent. Regular repositioning, which shifts the pressure point and alternates between loading and relieving it, provides relief. The standard in medical technology is air mattresses whose transverse chambers are alternately pressurised.
Assignment
An system concept was developed for a mattress overlay that automates repositioning: the elements can be controlled separately to reposition patients and relieve specific body regions in a targeted manner.
Result
Research on the system concept has been ongoing since 2020.
